Female president possible in 2015 —Jonathan

DESPITE uncertainties on whether he will re-contest in 2015 or not, President Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja, on Thursday, said electing a woman president in the next general election is possible, especially if women decide to do so.

President Jonathan warned that it was too early to talk about 2015 polls and declined to state, at least for the umpteenth time, whether he would seek re-election or not.

Matters relating to his eligibility for the poll are currently in court and the outcome is being awaited as a major factor that will determine the election in 2015.

Speaking, however, at the general assembly of the seventh summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission, at the interim secretariat of the association, President Jonathan said “if women decide to elect a woman president in 2015, they can do it.”

He told the summit that the commitment of his administration to electoral reforms and justice had ushered in an era where women could deploy their numerical strength to ensure that their preferred candidates won elections at all levels.

Jonathan drew instance to the recently-concluded governorship election in Edo State, where the percentage of women participation appreciated.

He expressed satisfaction that the free and fair mantra of his administration was being replicated in most African countries.

Jonathan insisted that Africa must remove bottlenecks that barred women from realising their full potentials.
