Jonathan doesn’t need North elders for 2015 – Presidency

The Presidency on Tuesday said President Goodluck Jonathan did not need the support of the spokesman for the Northern Elders’ Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, or “his North” to win the 2015 presidential election if he decides to contest.

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said this in an interview with our correspondent.

He was reacting to Abdullahi’s interview with The PUNCH in which he said the North would not support Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election.

He had said, “My part of the North will not support him (Jonathan). The South owe us a moral debt and they should pay. There is nothing personal against the person of President Goodluck Jonathan. There is something wrong with the system that threw him up against equity and justice.”

But Gulak said Jonathan could not lose sleep based on that statement because Abdullahi did not support the president when he won the 2011 election.

The presidential spokesman said Abdullahi’s statement only pointed to the fact that the elder statesman was becoming senile.

Gulak said, “One thing that should be clear is that Abdullahi did not support President Jonathan in 2011 and he won the election. He will still not support the President in 2015.

“By the way, which North is he talking about that will not support the President? Is it his North, Buhari’s North, Ribadu’s North?

“Honestly, the position of his North does not count as far as the 2015 election is concerned. He is just one individual.

“So where is Abdullahi’s North. It is clear he is getting senile.”
