Jonathan in last minute bid to save Kogi PDP

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, late on Wednesday, kickstarted a last minute move aimed at ensuring victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kogi.

Sources in Abuja confirmed that the president had kicked off a meeting with stakeholders in the state at press time on Wednesday.

It was also confirmed that the president was out to ensure that the party walked as a united body during the governorship election which will be held on Saturday.

The meeting, according to sources, was being attended by Governor Ibrahim Idris; the gubernatorial candidate of the party, Captain Idris Wada; the candidate who emerged in the January governorship primary of the party, Alhaji Jubril Isah (Echocho) and members of the state caucus in the National Assembly.

It was confirmed that the president was worried that the division in the party could cost it victory in the  election.

“The President was concerned that most of the stakeholders in the party were not at the grand finale of the campaign on Monday. He became worried that many of the stakeholders stayed away from the campaign. Even those who were at the campaign were not as enthusiastic about it. He then decided to take the bull by the horns, so that the grudges would be resolved,” a source said.

One of the stakeholders told the Nigerian Tribune that following the call for a stakeholders’ meeting with the president, many political stakeholders were reviewing their position in favour of the PDP.

“What we will ensure is that our party wins first and then we can resolve internal wrangling,” one of the sources said.
