Jos crisis, not religious – Kukah

Socio-political commentator and Vicar-General, Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, Reverend Father Matthew Kukah, has warned Nigerians not to get confused, about the recent crisis in Jos and other parts of northern states of the nation with religion.

Father Kukah, while addressing the Young Men Christian League of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Mount of East, Ebute –Metta East, Lagos explained that the more the crisis was attributed to religion, the more it got escalated

According to him, understanding Islam was a key point to Nigeria’s national survival and unity. “There are fundamental ideological or theological differences between Islam and Christianity.”

“We must never confuse the attitudes and actions of fanatics and criminals, who use the cover of religion to weak havoc on society. These criminals must be made to face the wrath of the law and not be treated as persons with any religious claims.

“Those who claim that these people are acting for Islam forget that for these criminals, their war is against society not religion and indeed, many Muslims have fallen victims to their excesses. After all, the violent killings of some very prominent Muslim Sheikhs like Gafar in Kano was not perpetrated by outsiders of another faith.

He, however, explained that only dialogue could give the nation a better perspective of how it could rid its world of these vermin.”
