Martins pays Levante buyout clause himself

MADRID (AFP) – Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins has paid the buyout clause in his contract with Levante himself, the Spanish club confirmed on Tuesday.

It is thought that the former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker made the payment, said to be about three million euros ($3.9 million, £2.6 million) so he can join Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders.

“Obafemi Martins has deposited this afternoon at the headquarters of the Spanish professional league (LFP) the fee which corresponds to the buyout clause in his contract with Levante,” said a statement on the club’s website.

“The LFP have then proceeded to transfer the fee and it has been deposited with Levante.”

Former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker Martins was left out of the squad for Levante’s 0-0 draw with Getafe at the weekend after stating his desire to leave the club to join Seattle.
