Presidency wants Immigration to check illegal immigrants

THE Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan and National Coordinator of SERVICOM, Mr Sylbriks Obriki, has called on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to work towards improving the image of the country by checking influx of immigrants who pose security threats to the nation.

He said the service could achieve the feat by ensuring excellent professional conduct by its officers and men and evolving effective border patrol.

Obriki, according to a statement by the public awareness manager of SERVICOM Office, Patience Musa, made the appeal when he paid a visit to the newly appointed Comptroller-General of the NIS, David Shikfu Parradang, at the immigration village in Abuja.

He advocated a cordial inter-ministerial relationship between NIS and other agencies as it relates to immigration issues and trans-border movements.

According to him, interfacing role between the service and the international community was very critical that all hands must be on deck to ensure that efficient service delivery was evolved.

He told the NIS boss that, “I would appeal to you to ensure excellent professional conduct by officers and men of the Immigration service so that they can deliver on their mandate and ensure effective border patrol to check illegal immigrants.

“For you to succeed, you have to identify who your key partners and stakeholders are and constantly consult and engage them in the delivery of your services.”

Responding, the NIS Comptroller-General disclosed that new passport cameras would be launched before the end of the year to improve process of passport issuance across the country.

Meanwhile, the SERVICOM National Coordinator has charged SERVICOM focal officers from state offices of the NIS to contribute their quota to improvement of service delivery in their state offices.
