The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has ordained 7,000 deacons and deaconesses at the on-going 60th convention at the church’s headquarters located at the Redemption Camp, kilometre 46. With a working theme of “Coming Up Higher,” the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, urged members to seek God and His greatness by not only being hearers of the word but doers. The former university lecturer noted that members can only ‘come up higher’ by adhering to the true tenets of the Bible, the tenets of faith, purity of heart and a willingness to constantly seek His face.
A member of the church and an attendee at the convention who spoke to New Nigerian Politics from his base in Lagos ‘testified’ of the presence of the Lord and the numerous opportunities at the convention available for members to grow in the Lord. “There are many plenary sessions at this convention that would enrich one’s soul,” he noted. “I plan on attending as many as I can, I wish I can attend all,” he further noted. The source, however, complained of the seemingly intractable traffic congestion and the increased transport fare that has become the hallmark of the convention year after year. “It is very difficult to get there, the traffic situation is a mess,” the source noted.
Upon further investigations, New Nigerian Politics learned that the Federal Road Safety Corp, the federal agency mandated to ensure traffic orderliness on the nation’s dilapidated roads had dispatched scores of its officers to the venue to assuage the traffic congestion aided by volunteer members of the church.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God was founded in 1952 by the late Pa Josiah Akindayomi and is one of the fastest growing churches in Nigeria. In 2009, its leader, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, was named among the fifty most powerful persons in the world by Newsweek Magazine (USA).
