4 more killed, many injured in Lagos

At least four persons were killed and many others including a senior police officer were injured yesterday in Lagos during the continuous protest against the Federal Government removal of fuel subsidy.

While two protesters on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada were crushed to death, two others sustained serious injury from the accident at the Mile 12 area of the metropolis.

Two street urchins lost their lives in Mushin area of the metropolis and the Divisional Crime Officer at the Onipanu Police Station suffered gunshot from some street urchins who barricaded the Ikorodu Road at the Onipanu axis.
Daily Sun gathered that at about 10.00 am, some protesters converged on the Mile 12 area of the metropolis to register their dismay about the removal of fuel subsidy.

While the protest was on going, a hit and run commercial bus rammed into a commercial motorcycle, killing the operator and the passenger instantly.
An eyewitness, Joseph Nwaoked Ike told Daily Sun that while running away from the scene, the commercial bus driver also ran into two protesters who sustained injuries.
The corpses were said to have been deposited at the General Hospital while the injured ones were rushed to a nearby hospital.

It was also gathered that some street urchins popularly known as Area Boys who had been fighting battle of supremacy on who should be in control of some areas at Mushin met at a joint on the Moshalashi area.
They engaged themselves in a serious argument that led to a free-for-all.

During the fight, broken bottles, machetes, daggers and other dangerous weapons were freely used and when the dust settled, two persons were killed while many others sustained various degree of injury.
It was gathered that some of the street urchins had earlier on barricaded the Ikorodu Road at the Onipanu Bus Stop axis and were extorting money from passersby.
A police source told Daily Sun that the Divisional Crime Officer(DCO) was detailed to disperse the hoodlums and clear the barricade.

The police source said that while the DCO and his team were approaching the scene, some of the hoodlums started firing at the police and a bullet hit the DCo on his head and he fell down.
The DCO was rushed to General Hospital where he is receiving treatment. Lagos State Police spokesman, Mr. Samuel Jinadu who confirmed the attack on the DCO said the man only sustained a minor injury from the gun shot from some hoodlums.

Daily Sun also gathered that PPL Police Post Okokomaiko area of the metropolis has been set ablaze by some protesters and some inmates allegedly released by the angry protesters.
It was also gathered that some protesters who were not happy with the killing of a protester by the police at the Yaya-Abatan area of Ogba attempted to attack the Area G police command Ogba and the Pen Cinema Police Station but were repelled by the police.
As at press time, heavily armed policemen numbering about 30 were manning the Area G police command while about 20 armed policemen were guarding the Pen Cinema Police Station to avert repraisal attack by the angry protesters.
