Cross River Disburses N10m to 14 Communities

Cross River Governor And Presdent Jonathan.

The Cross River State Government has disbursed over N10, 344,794.00 to 14 communities across the state under the Community and Social Development Projects. The benefiting communities include: Lehanghe in Abi, Ikot Enetim Eneyo, Aye Eyo and Obot Eyo in Odukpani, PTA Secondary School, Iyametet and secondary commercial School, Ofodua in Obubra.

Others are Nde in Ikom, Ayimkang in Boki, Amukwong in Obudu and Gabu, Okpodon, Ikaliya and Okpenehi in Yala LGA. Presenting the cheques to the benefiting communities, the General Manager of Cross River State Community and Social Development Agency, Mr. Victor Ovat said that Obot Eyo, Ayimikang and Okpenehi would receive their cheques on a later day.

Mr. Ovat said the release of the cheques was only the first phase of disbursements, adding that a total of N112, 182,660.00 is expected to be disbursed to the communities at the completion of various projects. At Ikot Enetim Eneyo, Mr. Ovat noted that the programme was packaged to make life more meaningful and better for rural dwellers.

He maintained that in the long run, the step would reduce the rural-urban drift in the state. According to him, benefiting communities are expected to contribute 10% of the total project cost while the remaining 90% will be contributed by government.

The General Manager advised all benefiting communities to take their projects seriously and ensure that they are completed on record time so as to access funds for the implementation of new projects in their domain. Ovat called on the communities to avoid wrangling of any sort but support the project management communities in the discharge of their duties and warned communities against failure to meet conditions in the agreement with the agency.

“Henceforth, any community found wanting will be denied further access to the funds. Some communities’ response leaves much to be desired. This is a clear demonstration of lack of will,” he stated and expressed satisfaction at the cooperation the agency enjoyed from local government councils.
