Dana Air crash victim demands N500m compensation

IT may not yet be uhuru for the management of Dana Air though it has been allowed to resume operations after the June 3, 2012 crash of the airline’s MD 83 plane  that killed over 160 people.

This became obvious as one of the owners of the warehouse and duplex that the aircraft crashed into, Pastor Daniel Oluranti Omowumi,  at the weekend, claimed that he lost over N500 million in estimated property to the crash.

Pastor Omowumi, who spoke to reporters at the weekend,  explained that he waited till now to seek redress over the insensitivity of DANA Air to his plight as a mark of respect for those who  perished in the crash.

According to him, since June 20, 2012, following the request of the airline, he forwarded a comprehensive letter of  claim through his solicitor, Messrs Dele Adesina and co., but added that the airline is yet to respond, but  only gave him  N500,000,  as temporary relief, which he rejected because it will not in any way address  the inconvenience, torture and homelessness his family has suffered after the crash.

He said:”I have waited till this moment so that the families of our dear Nigerians and other nationals killed in the crash could be attended to by DANA Air. Today, I have come to realise that the management of DANA Air are  satanic. How can you destroy all that I have worked for in my life and yet be comfortable to turn deaf ears to my plight and homeless family.

“My lawyer clearly indicated in my letter to DANA Air that my property serves as my residence and business premises, as I use the place as furniture factory, warehouse and fish pond.”

The pastor, who vowed to embark on series of actions to seek redress, which is not limited to court action, also called on President Goodluck Goodluck Jonathan,  Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, and the Minister of Aviation to put pressure on DANA Air to discharge their responsibility to him as stipulated by law.

He listed the property damaged to include a six- bedroom duplex, four- bedroom bungalow and two standard warehouses all located at No. 8/10 Popoola Street, Iju / Ishaga, Lagos State.

Aside this, he said four fish ponds that were fully stocked were also damaged, alongside other items including 517 panel doors, imported educational materials, imported kitchen utensils, furniture making  machines and other equipment.
