Delta police boss orders stop and search on highways
Nigerian Police Friday, March 30th, 2012The new Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Mr Ikechukwu Ayodele Aduba, on Thursday, directed his officers and men to immediately return to the highways for patrol, noting that the ban on road checkpoints by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, was misconstrued by them.
Aduba, who was reacting to the increasing spate of kidnapping and robbery on major highways in the state, said there should be nipping points and stop and search to curtail the menace which was making nonsense of the security measures put in place by the police.
Speaking with journalists during his operational tour of Warri Area Command, the police boss said he was sad that all through his journey from Asaba to Ughelli and Warri for two days, he did not see policemen on the highway.
“The Inspector Geneal of Police was clear on the ban on checkpoints but he did not say there should be no police posts. He did not say there should be no stop and search. What is expected of you is that if there is any need, you stop and search one, two or three vehicles and allow others to go their way,” he stated.
