Disturbing Picture: Dead conductor: LASTMA hands over officers to police

The 30-year-old bus conductor allegedly killed by LASTMA officials

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Saturday said it had handed over three officers of the agency to the police over the death of a 24-year-old commercial bus conductor, Rasheed Alabi.

Alabi was killed in Lagos last Thursday after two officials of LASTMA allegedly pulled him down from his bus to his death.

The General Manager of the agency, Mr. Babatunde Edu, in a statement, said the suspects, who were arrested in their various homes in the early hours of Friday, had also been directed to stay away from their duty posts to allow the police to carry out proper investigations into the incident.

Edu reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to ensure safety of lives and property of the citizenry and urged officers of the agency to be more proactive in the discharge of their duties.

He said, “LASTMA officials are also expected to be civil in their dealings with motorists and members of the public. The state would not condone any act of indiscipline.”

Edu said the state government had expended a lot of money in training and retraining of LASTMA officials and would not settle for anything less than a quality service delivery organisation.

He said, “The desired results could only be achieved through the application of the laws that established the agency.

“The LASTMA is not a revenue generating agency as being alleged by some people, but a traffic management organisation manned by dedicated and committed officers who are mandated to manage and control traffic in the state, a task which they have proved to be equal to over the years.”
