Ekiti federal varsity takes off in 2012 — VC
Ekiti, Headlines, State News Monday, September 12th, 2011
The Vice-Chancellor of the new Federal university in Ekiti State, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has said that the institution will commence academic activities in January 2012.
But the commencement is predicated on a factor: An approval by the state government for the takeoff of the university from the Government Unity School, Oye-Ekiti.
Nebo, a former vice- chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State said this in Oye-Ekiti on Friday at a reception organised in his honour by the indigenes of the town.
Governor Kayode Fayemi had last week announced that the university would be co-hosted by Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti.
The governor had wanted the university to be cited in Ikole-Ekiti while indigenes of Oye-Ekiti demanded that its location in their community.
Nebo said, “The facilities on the ground at Oye-Ekiti are not adequate as it is now; but we will see what we can do to make it adequate before January. But it will be wonderful if our Governor Fayemi would be kind and gracious enough to give us the originally intended site here in Oye where there is a unity school.
“That site will make it much easier to start. That way, we start pari pasu the two campuses (Oye and Ikole) together. I believe that the governor himself will be very happy with that. We are hoping that we can get that facility. If we don’t, then it means that we might take off a little later than that. But my prayer and hope is come January 2012, the students would be on the ground.”
The vice-chancellor, who said he would also visit Ikole-Ekiti to inspect the take off site, added that his intention was to make the university one of the best not only in Nigeria but in Africa.
He called on the people of the state to join hands with him in his desire to develop the university.
