Ekiti gives police gadgets, IG pledges better security

THE Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Abubakar Hafiz Ringim has promised improved security in Ekiti State. He made the pledge in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday after commissioning the Security Alert System and 24 vehicles equipped with high frequency radio and communication gadgets donated to the state police command by the state government.

The event took place eight days after a bloody bank robbery in the state where five people were killed and 15 others wounded.

Ringim, who described the incident as “unfortunate,” condoled with the families of the victims and assured the residents of the state that such incident would never happen again, especially with the commissioning of the new equipment.

The Police boss said the Security Alert System configuration would enable the command response to any robbery case in any part of the state and urged the residents to register with the command so that their residences could be configured and linked with the system to stem the crime wave in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, said if the command had Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), his men would have apprehended the robbers.

He said the command appealed to the IG to implore the governor to add two APCs to the command to enhance its performance.

“There is no doubt that the availability of the APCs would make a big difference in the police fight against bandits in the state.

Governor Kayode Fayemi said the gesture was to enable the police nip any act of criminality in the bud with the use of the equipment in strategic locations across the state.
