Fayose returns to PDP, eyes vice-chairmanship

Former Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State on Wednesday returned to the Peoples Democratic Party.

He registered at his ward in Afao, in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

Fayose, who was issued with the PDP Card number 4619857 and ward registration number 841 at the party secretariat in Afao-Araromi ward by the ward chairman, Chief Olaiya Abiola, immediately declared his intention to contest the vice-chairmanship of the PDP in the South-West.

Speaking with journalists after the registration, he said he was qualified to occupy the position based on his contributions to the party and his large following.

Fayose, who was an underdog in 2003 governorship election, defeated the then Governor Niyi Adebayo of the Alliance for Democracy. He was however, impeached and removed in a controversial circumstances in October 2006 on allegations of corruption.

The former governor while still in the PDP, worked against the interest of ousted Governor Segun Oni of the same party during the governorship rerun in April 2009. He openly campaigned for the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who was eventually declared the winner by the Court of Appeal.

Fayose resigned from the PDP in 2010 and joined the LP where he contested the April poll but lost to incumbent Senator Babafemi Ojudu of the ruling Action Congress.

The return of the former governor who contested the election to represent Ekiti Central Senatorial District at the Senate on the platform of the Labour Party ended the speculations that some PDP leaders were making overtures to him to return to the party.

The former governor said, “I’m back in the PDP to cement the broken walls of the party in Ekiti and the South-West.”

He said he had resigned his membership of the LP in a letter dated September 12 and addressed to the National Chairman of the party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu.

The letter, he said, was acknowledged by a top member of the National Working Committee of the LP, Mr Mohammed Salami.

Fayose said, “Osun State has occupied the position (vice-chairmanship) three times, even no Ekiti man has ever been elected as the national secretary. It is time for us to fight for our own fair share in the PDP and this we are going to achieve if we all work together.”

He said although he was treated shabbily by the PDP in the past, he said he had forgotten the experience and was back to reinforce the party.

He said, “My people took the pains to look for me in Afao, Ibadan and Lagos not minding the risk and I am doing this as a way of reciprocating their gesture.

“God has given me a rare opportunity and grace to be sought after by my people . I am not God and I will never play God.”

Advising his party men to work together to develop the state and the party, he added, “Governor Kayode Fayemi should not be seen as our enemy, but what we should be pre-occupied with is how to build a virile and strong PDP that can win elections anytime, any day.

“I see no reason why I can’t work with Oni because now, he is no longer the governor and the ball is not in his legs, I can only join hands with him to build the PDP and win Ekiti in the next elections.”
