Fire destroys 120 shops in Lagos market
Headlines, Lagos, State News Monday, May 19th, 2014OVER 120 shops were, early on Sunday, destroyed, and goods worth millions of naira razed as fire ravaged Daleko Market in Mushin area of Lagos.
The arrival of fire fighters from Isolo, Ilupeju and Ikeja fire service stations prevented a total disaster as the market would have been completely razed by the ravaging fire.
The fire was said to have started from one of the shops at groundnut oil and palm oil section as a result of power surge and completely razed all the neighbouring shops
A resident on Isolo Road where the market was situated, Siminsola, told the Nigerian Tribune that “it was a big fire incident and we (the residents) were very apprehensive.”
It was gathered that one of the security men at the market had noticed heavy smoke and fire from the palm oil and groundnut oil section and mobilised others, but they could not do anything as the fire reportedly grew wilder.
Over 120 shops and thousands of Jerry cans of groundnut oil and palm oil were completely destroyed in the fire incident.
The director of the state fire service, Rasak Fadipe, called for serious overhaul of electrical installations at some of the markets in the state, describing fire incidents at markets as “alarming.”
Fadipe, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, said 120 open shops were destroyed in the fire incident, adding that it started from power surge from one of the shops.
