Four feared dead as NURTW members clash in Lagos again

Four persons are believed to have died as suspected members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed in Adeniji Adele in Lagos Island, Lagos State on Monday over a leadership crisis in the union.

The fighting, which began at 2am, later spread to Ladipo area of Mushin.

It was also mainly influenced by the power tussle between two NURTW chieftains, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo and Alhaji Akanni Olohunwa, over leadership of the state chapter.

The lingering crisis has claimed lives across the state in the last one month.

Three persons reportedly died when the gangs clashed on Sunday.

On Monday morning,  a large number of youths from Idungaran in Isale Eko area invaded Isalegangan Street (Onola) with dangerous weapons such as AK 47 rifles, knives, machetes, iron rods and gallons of petrol.

The invaders took over Agarawu and Itafaji.

They also tried to vandalise an ATM machine located inside New Star Photos, a two-storey building at 28, Isalegangan Street but failed. They then set the building and 20 vehicles ablaze.

A source said it had been on in the last three weeks in spite of the deployment of policemen in the troubled streets.

Shops and stallsa remained shut for part of Monday while children could not go to school.

Many remained indoors while eyewitnesses said there were broken bottles everywhere.

Calm returned to the area wore policemen in Armoured Personnel Carriers were drafted to the troubled streets to quell the violence.
