Nigerian Police, Ogun, State News Friday, April 15th, 2011
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, has promoted 31 police officers in the Ogun State Police Command.
Ringim, at the decoration of the promoted officers at Police Headquarters at Eleweran in Abeokuta on Friday, described electoral duties as part of the ad hoc functions of the police.
He stated the need for the police to be dedicated to their primary responsibility of ensuring the protection of lives and properties of the citizenry, and that the demands posed by the elections would not be accepted as an excuse in case of any breakdown of law and order.
He advised the police on the need to ensure adequate security for the success of the poll, adding that peace corps such as vigilance groups, Oodua Peoples Congress and Egbesu, among others, were barred from electoral duties.
The IG, represented by the Commissioner of Police for Ogun State Command, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, urged the police to ensure the enforcement of restrictions on movement and vehicles, including motorcycles, during the election period.
“Various peace corps have been barred from participating in any of the electoral duties. There is restriction of movement and vehicles or motorcycles found should be impounded with culprits charged to court accordingly,” he stated.
He charged the officers promoted on the need to be more dedicated to duties, and see the promotion as a challenge for better performance.
