Jigawa builds database of taxable adults
Headlines, Jigawa, State News Tuesday, November 8th, 2011JIGAWA State is building the database of all taxable adults in the state to make it easy to track all revenue due to government and close all leakages, chairman of the state revenue board, Alhaji Muktar A. Wada has disclosed.
The chairman who made the disclosure recently while fielding questions from newsmen in his office indicated that success of revenue collection depended on the right information on people under the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) scheme.
He indicated that the major tax paying people were the civil servants adding that 90 per cent of revenues were from the PAYE scheme.
Wada pointed out that the wealthy individuals who were supposed to pay taxes were not paying. He, however, he said that when the personal income tax amendment law was signed by the president it would help the civil servants and low income earners
“The president has said he was going to sign the personal income tax amendment law and when the law comes into operation it is going to favour not only the civil servants but the salary earners. All those earning incomes within the range of only N300, 000 are going to pay less than 0.5 per cent. It is an achievement because it means that the purchasing power of the low-income earners is going to increase.
“Technically those earning above N1.6 million are now going to be made to supplement what government is going to lose from that angle, which is the redistribution of income. With the right information those earning above the N1.6 million margins are now going to be the real tax payers.”
He added that revenue payment was automated in such a way that revenue for Jigawa could be paid from anywhere in the country through the pay direct system.
