Pension scam: FG beefs up security around investigator

The Federal Government has advised security beef up around the chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Pension Reform, Abdulrasheed Maina.

This action by the government, at the weekend, is a subtle demonstration of support for Maina, notwithstanding the stance by the Senate which alleged in a report by its Ad Hoc Committee on Pension that he mismanaged part of the pension loot he recovered.

At the moment, the State Security Service (SSS) has increased the number of security details around the private residence and office of the head of the task team, apparently in compliance with the government’s directive.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the government took the decision to provide maximum security for Maina in response to repeated signals about plans to kidnap him after several attempts made to disband the task team failed.

The plot to kidnap Maina was said to have been leaked by one of those contracted to perfect the plan.

Some of those currently facing charges of looting the pension fund were said to  be prime suspects in the kidnapping plot, although thorough investigations were said to be ongoing on the issue.

The indicted pension fund looters had earlier been reported to have contributed the sum of N3 billion which they offered as bribe to exterminate the operations of the  task team.

When contacted, Maina confirmed the kidnap plot but said he only woke up to see a new set of securitymen in his residence, adding that it was when he made phone contacts that he discovered that the security beef up around him was not unconnected to the plot to kidnap him.

The Senate had, at the close of legislative session last week, adopted a report from its Ad Hoc Committee on Pension, which indicated that the head of the Task Team on Pension Reform had compromised by mismanaging the loot he recovered from government officials who allegedly looted pension fund.
