Picture: Famous Nollywood star, Ashley Nwosu, dies

The Nigerian motion picture industry globally known as Hollywood, lost one of its leading lights, Mr. Ashley Nwosu, early yesterday morning to the cold hands of death.

The Umuahia, Abia State-born hero of numerous hit movies died at the Yaba Military Hospital, Lagos, after several months of battling a protracted liver related ailment. He was in his late 50s.
Confirming the sad news, one of his daughters, Naomi, a lawyer, in a phone chat, disclosed that her dad was pronounced dead yesterday by the doctor attending to him at the hospital.

With a quaky voice, the devastated lady declined to comment further on her late father. She, however, promised that her family would make the burial plans public at the appropriate time. When Daily Sun demanded to speak briefly with her mother, Nneoma, she refused, maintaining that she was still in shock and weeping.

Reacting, Mr. Segun Arinze, famous actor and the national president, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), lamented that Nwosu’s demise was a national loss. “On behalf of my family and the entire AGN, we mourn with the Nwosu family on the irreparable loss and pray God to give them the grace to cope with the heavy loss. He was a professional and very passionate actor. May his soul rest in peace.”

Another top actor, Emeka Enyiocha, who was also shocked, regretted Nwosu’s sudden exit. He called on stakeholders and relevant government agencies to immortalize the late Nwosu, whom he described as a “big brother and uncle.”

Also mourning, Mr. Paul Obazele, the national president, Association of Movie Producers (AMP), who worked and collaborated with the deceased thespian on many laudable projects, stated that he was devastated by the news. He said the late Nwosu was a dedicated and committed entertainer, whose good works in the industry would surely outlive him.

Donald Okoli, another highly-rated producer in Nollywood, who worked closely with the late thespian, when he produced and later premiered his debut movie, “Shield of Faith,” at the Silverbird Cinemas, Lagos, in 2010, said that Nwosu’s demise had left a big vacuum in Nollywood. “I knew he was ill, but did not know he would die this early. We will forever miss and mourn his painful exit. Adieu, big uncle,” he lamented.
