Cross River, Headlines, State News Friday, March 16th, 2012By JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU, Calabar
ABOUT 35 persons suspected to be members of secret cults that have been terrorizing residents of Calabar, the Cross River state capital for five days have been arrested by the state Police Command.
Besides, over 10 suspected cultists and innocent residents of the area have been feared dead in the renewed supremacy clashes between the Vikings which allegedly operated through its cadet wing known as Skylo and the KK that also struck through the junior members called the Mafs.
Disclosing this in Calabar, the state Police Command Public Relations Officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said that the police were on top of the situation to bring to book all those involved in the rampage in the state especially, Calabar South Local Government Area.
ASP Bassey said, “Over 30 suspected members of the two cult groups have been arrested. One who sustained serious injury and taken to hospital is at the point of death. Those arrested are undergoing various stages of interrogation and after that those found culpable will be prosecuted.”
Though he said that the clashes happened when it was not expected, the Police had sent officers at areas suspected to be flash points to arrest the situation and attributed the ugly development to the supremacy tussle between the two groups, the Vikings and KK.
He also disclosed that some of those who carried out the rampage were junior members of the two rival groups and that the Police were still investigating the main reason behind the incident and those sponsoring the groups to disturb the peace in the state.
It was gathered that a pregnant woman at Uwanse Street met her untimely death when of the groups looking for a rival member struck in her compound but could not see him but decided to machete the woman though they later saw their opponent and snuffed life out of him.
