DETAILS emerged on Monday as to the factors that informed the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to kick off its presidential campaign in Lagos.
The presidential campaign team announced on Monday that the president would be kicking off his re-election bid in Lagos, on Thursday.
Sources close to the party told the Nigerian Tribune that the choice of Lagos was accepted due to the fact that the city hosts the largest voter population in the country.
It was also decided that as a former Federal Capital, Lagos is a mini Nigeria, which indicates that talking to the Lagos audience is like talking to the entire Nigeria.
The president, it was gathered, would, during the campaign, celebrate some of his key achievements in the last four years.
A top member of the party said that some of the achievements recorded by the president in the South-West would also be celebrated.
He listed some of them to include the remodelled General Aviation Terminal (GAT) in Ikeja, remodeling of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport wing, ongoing reconstruction of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the return of railways including the kick-off of some luxury coaches, as well as the reconstruction of the Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, leading to the nation’s ports.
The source said some of the ministers from the zone would also be addressing the crowd in Lagos, to tell them of the unique achievements of the Jonathan-led administration.
A strong supporter base of 250,000 persons is being mobilised across the South-West states to welcome the president to Lagos, another source said on Monday.
There were indications that some leaders had proposed Enugu for the kick-off, before the choice of Lagos was concluded.
Besides, it was also stated that Tafawa Balewa Square, which would be used as venue, was the same venue where Nigeria gained its independence from the British colonialists.
