Rivers: Gunmen kidnap Rev Father…community leader’s wife too
Headlines, Rivers, State News Friday, April 27th, 2012A Reverend Father in Onne, Rivers State, Fr. Nwika Gbinu, has been kidnapped by gunmen. The cleric was allegedly abducted recently in the premises of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Onne, in Eleme Local Government Area at about 2.49am.
A source told Daily Sun that the kidnappers whisked him away and he had since been in their den. The source told Daily Sun how one of the reverend father’s friends called his line and one of the kidnappers picked the call and demanded N50 million.
When his victim’s elder brother, Ledum, was contacted, he disclosed that someone also told him that he called his brother’s line and the abductors demanded the said amount of money as ransom.
But he said the kidnappers had not contacted the family nor made any monetary request. He, however, appealed to the kidnappers to release him unconditionally. Ledum also appealed to them to realise that he is a cleric who had no source of income except preaching the Word of God.
When Daily Sun contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Benjamin Ugwuegbulam (DSP) for his comment, he said he was not aware of any such kidnap.
The wife of a community chief, Mrs. Sabina Nweke had earlier been kidnapped by four armed men. She was said to have been kidnapped at 7pm.
