SGF: S’East govs unite against Nwodo
Governors, Headlines, South-East Sunday, May 15th, 2011The South-east governors met with former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme in Enugu yesterday to discuss the vexed issue of zoning and sharing of political positions at the federal level, which appears not to be in favour of the zone.
Also in attendance at the meeting, which held for about two hours at the Enugu Government House was the zonal Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metu. Although the chairman of the Governors’ Forum and Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi refused to disclose the outcome of the meeting, it was reliably gathered that the issue of zoning of the position of Speaker, House of Reps, Senate Presidency and position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) took centre stage.
The governors were said to be strongly opposed to the candidacy of former national chairman of PDP, Dr. Okesilieze Nwodo who was believed to have been penciled down alongside Chief Ojo Maduekwe for the position. The governors’ position against Nwodo was not unrelated to the battle between Governor Chime and Nwodo while the latter lasted as national PDP chairman.
Fielding questions from newsmen, Governor Peter Obi said, “as you can see, this is not strictly South-east governors’ meeting. We have some people invited among whom are Dr. Alex Ekwueme and the zonal PDP vice chairman.
“We deliberated on a number of issues which we decided that for now we are not going to make comment on but as we continue we’ll make statement on them. “However, we intend to thank the people of the zone for their support for Jonathan during the election. I want to assure you that we resolved to continue to suppprt the president. On the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, which appear to have elluded the South-east, the Anambra governor said they would comment on it in the near future. Apart from Governor T. A. Orji of Abia State who was not at the meeting, all the other governors, including outgoing Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi, Peter Obi and Sullivan Chime of Enugu were all present.
