11 die, others injured in Ibadan auto crash
Headlines, Oyo, State News Tuesday, October 11th, 2011Eleven people, including two school children, were reportedly killed in multiple accidents on Tuesday. Also, 16 others were said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries in separate locations in Ibadan.
An accident was reported to have occurred along Ibadan-Ife Road around 2:47am while the second one was reported at Boluwaji area along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway around 7:30am in which about five vehicles were said to have been damaged.
Our correspondent learnt that the crash occurred when an 18-seater passenger Toyota Hiace vehicle marked LAGOS QX 362 LSR headed for Abuja from Lagos, drove against the traffic.
The driver, who was said to be drunk, according to eyewitnesses, rammed into two stationary vehicles.
The Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps, Egbeda Unit Command, Mr. Dennis Loryina, who confirmed the incident, said a truck with number plate LAGOS XT 134JJJ, had broken down along the road coming from Ife. The driver of the vehicle was said to be trying to fix the tyre when another truck, with number plate, LAGOS XW 511 LSR rammed into the stationary vehicle.
The driver was said to have sustained injury and was rushed to the hospital. Loryina said the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus, coming from Lagos had left his lane because of an alleged armed robbery attack and later ran into the two stationary vehicles.
He said that seven of the 18 passengers died on the spot, while 14 sustained injuries. He added that the injured victims were taken to the University College Hospital while the corpses were deposited at a Catholic Hospital, Ikire, Osun State.
In a related development, four people with two school children allegedly lost their lives in an auto crash along Ibadan-Lagos Expressway.
The accident was said to have involved two petrol tankers and a commercial vehicle with number plate GOMBE XA 760 BLR and others marked LAGOS XU 440 SAK and UZ 758 KJA.
It was learnt that the crash happened while two trailers attempted to overtake each other but one reportedly ran into a commercial vehicle, leading to the death of the two pupils and another person.
The motorboy of one of the trailers reportedly died on the spot. A passer-by (a woman) was said to have been hit by the trailer before running into a mechanic village where about six vehicles were damaged.
The damaged vehicles are a Mercedes Benz 190 E with number plate LAGOS AJ 85 KSF, Nissan Sunny with registration number BX 592 SMK, Toyota Nissan number AP 127 NRK, a Mazda 323 marked AE 717 RSD and a Honda number MZ800AAA.
