110,000 cases before courts —NJI
Headlines, Judiciary Friday, June 15th, 2012The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has expressed dismay over the high number of cases before the nation’s courts, stating that there are no fewer than 110,000 of such cases currently before the Supreme Court and other lower courts across the country.
Speaking at the opening of a multi-door court house in Katsina State, on Thursday, the NJI Administrator, Justice Umar Eri, who noted that a total of 10, 000 courts existed in the country, said 40,000 Nigerians depended on one judge and a lawyer for litigation-related matters.
Eri, represented by an NJI official, Mr Gilbert Tor, said the situation had led to delay in attending to cases and delivery of justice, adding that the multi-door court house would go long way in providing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism without recourse to formal court process.
He concluded that the inauguration of the multi-door court was part of the judicial reform in the country aimed at sanitising the sector.
