15 killed in Abuja road crash
Abuja (FCT), Headlines, State News Monday, July 18th, 2011No fewer than 15 persons died and several others injured in another auto crash along Nyanya/Karu, Mararaba Road in Abuja yesterday when a truck lost control and rammed into about eight other oncoming vehicles. The accident occurred at about 2:30 pm. According to an eyewitness, the truck, which was carrying iron rods had brake failure and swerved into the other lane, ramming into eight on coming vehicles including commercial buses .
Though Police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood put the casualty figure at 10, the National Emergency Management Agency said 15 died.
An eyewitness said the only survivor of the first bus hit by the trailer was an eight-month- old baby.
The incident, which caused a traffic gridlock on the dual carriage road forced several commuters to trekk to their various destinations, while men of the FCT Police, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), National Emergency Management Agency and other para-military agencies had a hectic time removing the remains of the victims as well as controlling the traffic.
As at the time of filing this report, remains of the dead were said to have been deposited at the Asokoro General Hospital while those seriously injured were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.
In a related development, another truck conveying a bulldozer from a demolition site also lost control along the Kugbo furniture area of the same road leaving some people dead.
The trailer carrying bulldozer was said to belong to the FCT Department of Development Control, but when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the department, Josie Mudashiru said none of the department’s bulldozers was involved in any accident as she had contacted all the site offices and was told nothing happened.
The second accident happened barely an hour after the first occurred.
