2011: CPC confirms Buhari as presidential candidate

Erstwhile Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was Tuesday adopted as the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, at its national convention.

Buhari was adopted as the presidential candidate of the party by popular proclamation at the convention as there was no opposition against him at the end of nomination.

The unanimous adoption of Buhari would make it the third time in a row that the erstwhile Military Head of State would be contesting the presidency of the country. In the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections, he contested on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP.

The convention was itself preceded by a ‘stakeholders’ meeting’ of its warring factions.
Though the meeting was close-door, a key member of the party told Vanguard that it was summoned at the instance of the party’s Presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). The contestants for the office of the National Chairman of the party, Messrs Mike Ahamba and Tony Momoh were in attendance, as well as some of the financiers of the party and Kano State governorship aspirants, Alhajis Rufai Hanga and Muhammed Sani Abacha.

With expectations to seal an alliance deal with the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, next week Thursday, the CPC had to tidy up its National convention and ensure a hitch-free emergence of a National Chairman and other party executives at the Eagle Square.

The Buhari and Ahamba factions of the party had last week bickered over the choice of who heads the party at the convention. Buhari, a long time associate of Mr. Mike Ahamba had opted for veteran journalist and former Minister of Information, Chief Tony Momoh, while a faction sympathetic to Ahamba insisted the General’s choice was wrong and unfair.

As at press time last night, the election for the position of national chairman was yet to commence and Buhari was yet to name a running mate.
