2011: Imoke Emerges C’River PDP Sole Candidate

Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, has emerged the sole candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2011 gubernatorial election in the state.
This followed the screening of aspirants for the party’s gubernatorial primaries across the country which held at the party’s zonal headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
At the exercise which held in the six geopolitical zone between Tuesday, December 21 and yesterday, Cross River was the only state in South South geopolitical zone which fielded only one candidate for the 2011 gubernatorial election in the person of Governor Imoke who is seeking re-election for a second term of four years.
Fielding questions from newsmen after being screened, Imoke said the exercise went well, disclosing that some pertinent questions were attended to by the screening committee.
According to Imoke, the exercise was a replication of the internal democracy as being emphasised in Cross River, adding that the party ensured that the process was acceptable, transparent and credible as every contestant was given a fair chance to appear in person and be screened according to the party’s guidelines.
He said as a loyal member of the party, he complied with its decision by presenting his documents for screening while certain pertinent questions were asked, explaining that the absence of any other contestant from the state at the exercise showed his acceptability by the people in the state vis-a- vis his commitment to the well being of the people despite the lean resources available to the state.
Special Adviser, Political and Legislative Affairs, to Imoke, Ntufam Edet Okon Asim, who was on the governor’s entourage to Port Harcourt, described the exercise as impressive , noting that , Imoke had no time to waste due to his style of administration in the state.
Asim said the two days screening exercise underscored the integrity of the leadership of the party which was commendable.
Apart from the security personnel at the venue, various campaign groups clad in different attires representing the candidates, were seen drumming, singing and dancing to the admiration of passersby.wp_posts
