2027: Kwankwaso blasts Islamic cleric over ‘infidels’ attack on Christians, says Kano rejects him

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has condemned controversial remarks by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir on Christians and the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, declaring that the people of Kano do not support such divisive rhetoric.

Jingir sparked outrage after comments attributed to him at an event in Kano in which he backed the continuation of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections and referred to Christians as “infidels”.

Reacting on Monday, Kwankwaso said he was deeply concerned by the cleric’s remarks, warning that comments capable of dividing Nigerians along religious lines must be discouraged at a critical period in the country’s history.

“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks,” Kwankwaso said.

He maintained that political and religious leaders have a responsibility to promote truth, reconciliation and national unity rather than make statements capable of threatening Nigeria’s cohesion.

Kwankwaso warned against lending support to utterances that could undermine the foundations of the country, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We must not lend our voices to utterances capable of undermining the very foundation of our nationhood,” he said.

The former Kano governor said the 2027 elections should instead provide Nigerians with an opportunity to reward good governance and punish poor performance through the ballot box.

“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls,” Kwankwaso said.

He added that the current administration had, in his assessment, earned rejection at the polls.

Jingir’s comments have generated controversy over religion and the continued use of same-faith presidential tickets as political positioning gathers momentum ahead of 2027.
