Imo releases N2.7b for schools’ rehabilitation
Headlines, Imo, State News Wednesday, June 29th, 2011AT its maiden meeting on Tuesday, Imo State Executive Council directed the immediate release of N2.47 billion for the rehabilitation and renovation of all primary and secondary schools in the state.
Also, all permanent secretaries who were absent when Governor Rochas Okorocha paid an unscheduled visit by 8.00 a.m. at the state secretariat recently, would have their salaries for this month cut by 50 per cent.
Briefing journalists after the council meeting, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Soronnadi Njoku, said the meting presided over by Governor Okorocha, approved all the governor’s inaugural policy statements.
According to him, the slash of security vote of public officers, including that of the governor as announced, was ratified and adopted by the council from N6.5 billion to N2.5 billion.
According to him, the council approved the immediate disbursement of N100 million each to the 27 councils, adding that any school, which has a minimum population of 300, particularly in the rural areas, would be merged.
He added that in the case of urban schools, anyone that has a minimum population of 500 population, would be merged.
Njoku said the council approved the immediate procurement of school uniforms and sporting facilities to supplement the free education programme in the state.
Continuing, Njoku disclosed that each of the three geo-political zones would have fully equipped general hospitals, while two health centres would be sited in each of the 27 councils of the state.
He said all workers of ministries, parastatals and departments of the state government, would be verified with the aim of fishing out ghost workers, adding that the suspension and review of 10,000 jobs offered graduates by the immediate past government in the state, would be reviewed.
Njoku added that the council also okayed the reversion of old name of Imo State University, establishment of Department of Justice and the dissolution of the state Road Maintenance Agency and Councils.
