6 months on: Anambra to recall striking judiciary and health workers

More than five months after the face-off between the Anambra State government and its judiciary workers, the state has assured that the striking workers should prepare for resumption of duty.

Addressing journalists after commissioning the new High Court in Nnewi, the Anambra State governor, represented by his deputy, Mr. Emeka Sibeudu, stated that the state was prepared to dialogue with the workers in respect of their demand for increase in wages.
According to him, Anambra State is a beneficiary of the judiciary and the law, pointing out that it will do everything necessary to stabilize the court system in the state.

In his words: “The judiciary is the hope of the common man. We the state government are beneficiaries of the process and rule of law, so we are committed to anything that will make them function very well’, he said.
Denying that it was not odd commissioning a court without workers to fill, the deputy governor assured that “soon, the impasse will come to an end.”

Courts in the state have been paralyzed for more than five months, since the judiciary workers embarked on industrial action to protest the non-payment of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Scale (CONJUSS).
While welcoming the deputy governor to the commissioning, the out-gone Chief Justice of the state, Justice P.A.C. Obidigwe commended the state government for recognizing the need for a proper High Court in Nnewi division, noting that without the determination of the government, the Igwe and people of Nnewi and the ingenuity and foresight of the Hon. Justice C. J. Okoli, who conceived the project, the structure will still be a dream today.
The new court complex, which has 10 standard courtrooms and chambers, Registry, Bailiff’s office, lawyers robbing room and other departments will also accommodate both the High Court and Magistrate Courts.
