Boko Haram: We still hear bomb blasts in dreams – Bayelsa students
Bayelsa, Boko Haram, Headlines, State News Thursday, July 21st, 2011Yenagoa – About 45 students of Bayelsa State origin evacuated from the University of Maiduguri, Borno, Wednesday, narrated their ordeals in the troubled city.
The traumatised students lamented that days after being evacuated by the Bayelsa State Government, they still hear bomb explosions and sounds of gunfire in their sleep.
The students, who were evacuated through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr. Mike Olomu, said though they were safe, they needed the assistance of the state government to get their transcripts transferred to other federal institutions.
They said the experience they had on campus was ugly and may haunt them for a long while.
President of National Union of Bayelsa State Students, University of Maiduguri Chapter, Mr. Indutimi Akpoukpou, who spoke on arrival in Yenagoa, said that before the closure of the institution, the entire student community passed through nightmares with sounds of bombs and gunshots causing stampedes that had continued to haunt them.
Some students, he noted, sustained injuries, while the sounds of commercial motorcycle (Okada ) elicited fear of the unknown.
He said: “The announcement that the institution had been closed indefinitely was a big relief to us. No life was lost but a female student had serious injuries and another male student also had a fracture as a result of panic on campus.
“We heard bomb blasts and students were threatened. We were looking forward to the closure of the university because we were no longer comfortable.”
On the request to the state government to transfer them to other institutions of higher learning, Akpoukpou pleaded that if the insecurity in Maiduguri persists, the state government should assist in getting them re-allocated to other federal universities.
