Groups fault Jonathan over single term bill

MEMBERS of civil society organisations have faulted President Goodluck Jonathan’s bill on single term for the offices of the president and state governors, describing it as unfortunate and anti-democratic.

Making known their positions at the end of a stakeholders’ forum on the state of corruption in Nigeria, jointly organised by HEDA Resource Centre, Women Advocacy Research and Documentation Centre and others, in Lagos, they said the proposed bill was dangerous for accountability and the fight against corruption.

Such bill, according to a communique signed by Mr Olanrewaju Suraju and Ito Eze, needed the inputs of the people of the country, and, as a result, renewed its calls for convocation of Sovereign National Conference, (SNC).

“The proposal for a six-year single term for some elective posts by President Jonathan simply adds voice to the call for a Sovereign National Conference or a wholesome review of the Nigerian constitution, beyond the window dressing and self serving exercise embarked upon by the National Assembly.

“Either way, such exercise must revert to, and include the Nigerian people for legitimacy,” the communique read.
