Moon condemns UN building attack – Suspends Nigerian operations
Africa & World Politics, Latest Politics, United Nations Friday, August 26th, 2011UNITED Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is dispatching his deputy, the most senior UN official besides him, and other top officials of the UN to Abuja to find out details of yesterday’s attack on the UN building in Abuja.
Speaking with reporters at the UN headquarters after the attack, Ban said: “I am asking the Deputy UN Secretary General, Ms. Asha-Rose Migiro, to go to Nigeria immediately and I am mobilising the UN system to respond to this emergency.”
He added that the UN Deputy scribe would be accompanied by the UN security chief, Under-Secretary-General Gregory Starr, and they will both meet with Nigerian authorities upon arrival in Abuja to discuss the attack.
Calling the attack an assault, the UN leader disclosed that the bombed building houses “26 humanitarian and development agencies of the United Nations family.”

According to him: “This was an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others. We condemn this terrible act, utterly.”
Pressed about the possible motive for the attack by reporters, Ban said he could not say as yet adding, “that is why I am dispatching the Deputy Secretary-General and the DSS (Department of Safety and Security) Under-Secretary-General.”

Nigeria’s foreign affairs minister ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru also yesterday urged the international community to stand by Nigeria at this trying times even as he described the attack as an assault on humanity and lovers of peace.
“It is a dastardly act. It will not only be condemned but those responsible will be fished out. Nigeria seeks the understanding of the world at this point in time. It is not an attack on Nigeria but the entire humanity.”

British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said of the blast yesterday, “I was shocked to hear of today’s bomb attack at the UN compound in Abuja. This brutal act has killed and injured many innocent people and I utterly condemn those who have carried it out. My thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of those affected.
“Around the world, the UN works for peace, security and international cooperation and an attack on the UN is an attack on these principles.”
