PDP Alleges Plot to Destabilise Nigeria
Ondo, Party Politics, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) Tuesday, September 13th, 2011The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Monday raised an alarm over what it described as plots by some political parties to destabilise the country as well as impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.
PDP was reacting to a news report that a secret plot aimed at instigating the impeachment of President Jonathan through opposition members of the National Assembly was being hatched by a coalition of opposition political parties.
The report named the political parties involved in the plot to include the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP).
But in a swift reaction, the National Secretary of CPC, Mr. Buba Galadima described the statement from the PDP as “simply acts of blackmail.”
The statement, signed by the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Prof Ahmed Alkali, accused CPC of destabilisation plot, said: “This time around, the CPC along with other fringe political associations have devised a three-prong approach to destabilise the country. These methods include; a concerted campaign to discredit the judiciary, flying dangerous kites like impeachment of the President, and a so-called mass action to tarnish the image of the Federal Government if these options fail.”
PDP said that Nigerians would recall the unfortunate circle of violence that broke out in the country after the last general elections was incited by inflammatory statements by leaders of the CPC during their campaigns.
PDP, however, noted that the CPC and its allies did not have the majority to impeach the president, wondering how a party like the CPC with only 35 out of 360 members in the House of Representatives and seven out of 109 Senators meaningfully initiate an impeachment move against PDP, with an overwhelming majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.
PDP called on “Nigerians to be steadfast in defending those they have freely elected and to resist those whose sole agenda is to make our country ungovernable for their selfish interests.”
However, Galadima said the PDP accusation was a ploy to set the party against security agencies.
“This is merely part and parcel to blackmail CPC. We are democrats and wish to remind the PDP that the freedom of speech and information is not a guarantee to be reckless.”
