Nigerian Navy pays last respect to Aikhomu
Armed Forces, Headlines Wednesday, September 14th, 2011OFFICERS and ratings of the Nigerian Navy, in Lagos, on Wednesday, paid their last respect to the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, a former military vice president, who served as Chief of Naval Staff between 1984 and 1986.
Aikhomu died on August 17, at the age of 71 years.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Aikhomu’s remains were taken to the parade ground of ‘NNS Quorra’ at the Western Naval Com-mand, Apapa, Lagos, at about noon.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogbor, who represented the Chief of Navy Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Sa’ad Ibrahim, said the Nigerian Navy was paying its last respect to the late admiral because he served Nigeria meritoriously.
“I have paid a condolence visit to the Aikhomu family at their home here in Lagos, but many of our officers and naval personnel have not had such an opportunity.
“The CNS has requested that full honours and respect be given to him at the Western Naval Command, where he served the nation for most of his life,” Ogbor said.
Speaking with NAN after the session, a retired naval officer, Rear Admiral Goody Ombu, urged officers still in service to emulate the late Aikhomu in their dealings.
