Minimum wage: Kaduna govt begs workers to end strike
Kaduna, State News Tuesday, September 20th, 2011Worried by the strike embarked upon by workers in Kaduna State over the N18,000 minimum wage, the state government on Monday, appealed to the workers to return to work, as negotiations over grey areas were still in progress.
Speaking to newsmen at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, chairman of the state negotiating committee, Alhaji Mohammed Usman, said his committee had been meeting with the labour over some grey areas, which required further discussions.
He said such discussions had been on all through the weekend and called on the labour leaders to return to the negotiating table and call off the strike.
However, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr A. Ango, told newsmen that they had to embark on strike because of alleged insincerity on the part of the government towards the implementation of the minimum wage.
At the state secretariat and other government agencies in the state capital, workers were seen discussing in groups, while major gates remained closed.
Some patients were seen leaving hospitals and appealed to the workers to resume work, so that ordinary man would not be most affected.
