Ogun gets first female Chief Judge
Judiciary, Ogun, State News, Women Politics Thursday, September 22nd, 2011THE Ogun State House of Assembly has ratified the nomination of Justice Olatokunbo Olopade as the first female Chief Judge of the state to succeed Justice Oluremi Jacobs, who has attained retirement age.
The state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, had on Monday, forwarded Justice Olopade’s name to the Assembly.
Her name was ratified following a motion moved by the House Majority Leader, Honourable Israel Jolaoso, after she had been cleared by the House Selection Committee as the Chief Judge.
The chief judge-designate while addressing journalists shortly after the screening, sought for police support in ensuring speedy delivery of judgment on legal matters before the court.
She promised to cooperate with the police and the prison authorities in ensuring that cases were heard and judgments were delivered promptly.
Justice Olopade said that her leadership would put up a stakeholders’ meeting on criminal justice system aimed at reviewing the state’s civil and criminal procedural rules.
She promised to visit prisons from time-to-time to ensure that judgments were delivered on any legal matters before the law courts. She said this would help to decongest prisons across the state.
“As chief judge, I will be visiting prisons from time-to-time so that judgments are delivered in due course and I will also encourage that among the judges so that cases would be brought up in good time.
“The issue of innocent people will be set free. We have to work hand-in-hand with prison authorities and the police, because police do the investigations, it is when the police complete investigations that when the judgment”, she said.
