Labour suspends strike in Kaduna, vows to flush out ghost workers

Four days after it embarked on an indefinite strike, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their action following an agreement reached between the labour leaders and Kaduna State Government. This is just as they promised to help the government flush out ghost workers.

NLC Chairman, Adamu Ango while addressing newsmen at the NLC secretariat yesterday evening said the action was to allow for the measures reached in labour/government agreement to be implemented accordingly.

An agreement letter signed by both government and the labour union leaders, obtained by Daily Sun noted that, “the parties desire to implement the provisions of the National Minimum Wage (Amended Act 2011) in Kaduna State.”

According to the agreement jointly signed by Kaduna State Head of Service and Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Hannatu Ugah and Muhammed Usman, both government representatives and Chairman NLC and TUC Chairman, Adamu Ango and Mr. Paul Jezhi Yaro, it noted that “the employer shall apply measures to pay the approved national minimum wage with effect from April 1, 2011, but the commencement date would be December, 2011.

“No worker shall be victimized as a result of the current industrial action embarked upon by labour calling for the implementation of the Act.” The agreement further stressed that, between the date of the agreement and the commencement date, the labour would assist and cooperate with the employer (Kaduna State) in implementing actions and steps to improve revenue and flush out ghost workers on the payroll of the employer.

However, government and commercial activities in the state were still paralyzed, as the announcement suspending the action was made around 4:45pm yesterday.
