EFCC holds Rep who opposed Jonathan’s virement
EFCC Politics Tuesday, October 18th, 2011It was alleged yesterday that government might have perfected plans to move against arrowheads of lawmakers who opposed President Goodluck Jonathan’s proposal for virement and the removal of fuel subsidy.
It has been confirmed that the Chairman of an ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives probing the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Abdulmumin Jubrin, would be arraigned today in Lafia, Nasarawa State by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Jubrin, representing Bebeji/Kiru Federal Constituency of Kano State, who is the chairman, House Committee on Finance, according to a National Assembly source, would be docked alongside the former governor of Nasarawa State, Aliyu Akwe Doma.
Doma had been with the anti-corruption agency since he was arrested two weeks ago and he is being arraigned on a 12-count charge bordering on corruption.
Jubrin had gone to report at the EFCC office to honour a note left behind by two operatives of the agency in his office last Friday.
“Two people from EFCC came on Friday and left a note that Jubrin should report in their office, he had gone to honour the invitation and they are now holding him and we hear that charges have been preferred against him and some people. This is an assault on the parliament,” a member said.
According to him, it would be difficult to convince members that Jubrin was not being hunted because of his frankness in opposing the proposal for virement by President Goodluck Jonathan and the duty assigned him by the House to probe the NNPC.
It was gathered that Jubrin had been inundated with calls threatening him after he led the debate to oppose the virement on the floor of the House last week.
“Go and find out, when the EFCC woman addressed members of the National Assembly during the retreat preceding the inauguration of the 7th National Assembly at the International Conference Centre, it was only Jubrin who asked her questions.”
Document made available to Daily Sun showed that Jubrin was part of the consulting firm, Incapint Ltd., which consulted for the Nasarawa State government for the recovery of money due to the state government under the Paris Club exit payment in 2007.
His share of the negotiated 15 percent of the total sum recovered was paid into his company, Green Forest Investment Ltd. in February 2008.
Contacted on the detention and possible arraignment of Jubrin alongside Doma, spokesman of EFCC, Femi Babafemi promised to call back but has not as at the time of filing the report.
