Family of slain woman tasks IG

ABUJA — FAMILY of the late Madam Mary Tom Akpan of Ikot Inwang village, Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, has petitioned the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, over the cruel murder of their daughter on March 6, 2010.

The family is asking that all those allegedly implicated in the gruesome murder of Madam Akpan, including a principal officer at Cross River State House of Assembly, must be brought to book for justice and equity to prevail.

The petition, signed by N.T. Ojong and Co, for the deceased family, regretted that it was unfortunate that police investigations ordered last year to expose the suspected sponsors of Mary’s killer “ceased on the account of tremendous pressure on the bereaved family.”

It is, therefore, pleading with the IGP to probe and put on trial the accused persons for their alleged roles in circumstances that led to the death of Madam Akpa on that fateful day.

Copy of the petition made available to journalists in Abuja, alleged that the late Madam Mary Akpan got an invitation to the village head of Ikot Inwang, Bakassi Local Government Area’s house where she was killed by her assailants.

It alleged that: “While in the village head house, one Edet Obong , alias Tapa, who is (now) in custody in Calabar Prison, emerged with a sharp machete and dealt a machete blow on the back of the deceased.

“The village head’s son, another assailant gave her another machete cut on her head and she fell down and died.”

The petition explained that some arrests were made, including one Edet Obong, alias Papa, members of the village council and one Emmanuel Etim, alias Blackman, adding that “in his statement Edet Obong, alias Papa, mentioned a principal officer at the State House of Assembly as the one who contracted him to kill the deceased.

Insisting that theirs was a cry for help and justice, in line with the present administration’s avowed commitment to equity, justice, due process and fair-play, the petition asked IGP to act urgently and ensure that the killers of Madam Akpan were brought to justice.
