Boko Haram attacks police outpost, kills 2 in Borno

GUNMEN suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, who attacked and killed hundreds in Damaturu, Yobe State, last week have, again, attacked a police outpost at Mainok town, 35 kilometres from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, killing two police officers.

According to sources the gunmen came at about 7.00 p.m on Wednesday and started shooting at the police station.

“They started shooting sporadically and killed two police officers, then they set the place ablaze. They also attacked the office of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and destroyed everything there, while they set the patrol vehicle ablaze,” a source said.

The source added none of the officers of the FRSC were in the office at the time of the incident, as those on duty ran into the bush to escape.

The state Commissioner of Police, Simeon Midenda, said “it’s true there were attacks on a police outpost in Mainok village,” adding that the outpost was burnt down by the attackers suspected to be members of the Boko Haram, but there were no casualties.

But a resident said “they killed four policemen and freed suspects from cells and carted away guns and ammunition from the police station.”
