Lawmaker accuses policemen of Bribery

ABEOKUTA — A member of Ogun State House of Assembly, representing Ado-Odo Ota constituency II, Olusola Bankole, has accused some policemen attached to Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State of taking bribes during the recent environmental sanitation exercise.

Speaking on the floor of the House, during a plenary session, held yesterday, Bankole said some motorists and commuters caught for violating restriction movement, during the recent monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state, were extorted by some policemen for three hours.

The state government had ordered the restriction of both human and vehicular movement between 7:am and 10:am every last Saturday of the month for the exercise.

Raising the issue at the floor of the House, the lawmaker, who claimed to be a victim of extortion by yet to be identified policemen, said, the action of the uniformed men , almost led to break down of law and order, following his refusal.

He said, the policemen almost harassed him until after he disclosed his status as a lawmaker in the state, on the mission to monitor the exercise within his constituency, before they let him go.

He urged the House to do something to checkmate the police activities in the area before it led to another confusion.

Reacting to the submission of the lawmaker, the Speaker of the House, Suraj Adekunbi, urged members to exercise patient, saying, Rome was not built in a day.

On the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) fracas in Sango, on Tuesday, the House warned the factions to desist from further killings.

While confirming the number of death in the violence, a lawmaker representing Ota constituency I, Akinpelu Aina who represent the Ota constituency, said, the fracas claimed only two lives which

according to him include that of one Jehovah witness man and an official worker of the union.

Aina, who further explains what triggered the violence said, it was caused over the control of the parks.

The speaker, who however, appealed to the deceased family over the incident, urged the union to resolve the issue amicably and abide by the law and order in the state.
