Aftermath of groom’s killing: 9 more to go, Boko Haram vows

Fundamental Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has vowed to mow down nine more persons in addition to a groom that was shot dead after a wedding fatiha in Maiduguri, Borno State on Saturday.

The disclosure came yesterday as the sect’s spokesman, Abu Kaka, dissociated the group from the death of two men shot dead on Sunday evening at Tandari mosque in the Hausari ward of the state capital.

The late groom, according to Boko Haram, was an informant to security agencies in the state while the nine persons on its death list were his accomplices.

“The former local government councillor was involved in giving out information about our members to the security agencies which have led to the arrest of some of our members. He knew it and we didn’t make any mistake in our target. They were 10 in number. He was allegedly doing it with nine other accomplices and we are out to get them all,” Kaka vowed.

The killing of the groom, according to the sect, was deliberate even as it gave the indication that the other two persons killed in the process, might have been hit by stray bullets.
According to sources, the late councillor was said to be relaxing with his friends at his Shehuri Ward residence on Saturday morning shortly after performing his wedding fatiha when some gunmen came. He and two of his friends were shot dead, ending the earlier merriment that preceded the wedding ceremony.

Three other persons were also said to have been injured and immediately taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) by soldiers attached to the state’s Joint Task Force (JTF) for treatment.
Confirming the killing, JTF spokesman, Lt.- Col Hassan Mohammed, however, said that the suspected Boko Haram gunmen burst into a wedding in Shehuri North ward of Maiduguri metropolis and fired several shots at the former councilor and two of his friends.

Mohammed said the injured persons were hit by stray bullets at the ceremony before JTF personnel arrived the scene. He said the suspects came in an unmarked vehicle and fled to the neigbouring wards of Abaganaram and Lawan Bukar after the incident. He also said no arrest was made. “Recently reacting to the separate killings, in an interview, Kaka said the sect was responsible for the Saturday killing of the groom but disassociated the sect from the Sunday evening killing at the Hausari mosque, insisting that the sect was “not responsible.”

Daily Sun gathered that some gunmen had stormed the Tandari Mosque, known as Masalachi Tandari by the residents at Hausari ward in the city at about 6.45 pm on Sunday and opened fire in the direction of two of the worshippers who had just finished the sunset (Magrib) prayer, a development which forced other worshipers to flee for their lives.

Sources, however, said two people were later found in a pool of blood and later evacuated and deposited at the morgue of the UMTH. Residents said they were gripped with fear over the incident.
But the Commissioner of Police, Simeon Midenda, told journalists on phone that he was not aware of the killing, adding that nobody has informed his office. “We didn’t get such report of killing at Hausari as you said.

The people don’t report such cases to the police, so how do we know such thing happened?”, he disclosed.
The JTF spokesman also denied knowledge of the killing, saying that he did not get any report about the incident though two JTF patrol vehicles with soldiers blaring siren were seen moving toward the area of the incident at about 7.15 pm on Sunday.
