Robbers kill 4 policemen at divisional HQ

Four policemen met their untimely deaths yesterday in Kogi State when armed robbers opened fire on them right in front of the divisional police headquarters in Okene, The robbers were said to have come for a reprisal attack following the arrest of the driver and their vehicle a fortnight ago.

It was said that policemen on patrol flagged down an unmarked Toyota Camry car on Ogori- Agheva Road, the occupants of the vehicle on sighting the police fled into the bush.

But on conducting search on the vehicle, 10 AK 47 guns were said to have been cleverly tucked inside the vehicle with eight of the guns suspected to be some of the guns carted away from Kabba Police Station. The police were said to have arrested the driver and moved the vehicle to the divisional police headquarters within the town.

Irked by this development, the robbers regrouped few hours later and launched a reprisal attack on the police station killing four policemen and carted away their guns.

The robbers, it was gathered were the same gang that operated three weeks ago in Kabba when they bombed the divisional police headquarters and a first generation bank carting away arms and killing two police men.

The following day, the same gang was said to have unleashed terror on innocent citizens in Okene after disarming some policemen at the police area command office and killing two other policemen. A similar incident occurred two weeks earlier when the dare devil robbers invaded a high court premises in Ihima, killing a warder and spraying the vehicle of the trial judge with bullets before releasing one of their colleagues standing trial at the court.

When contacted over the issue, the police spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi said, he was not in town as at the time of filing this report. However, a source at the state police headquarters Lokoja, confirmed the incident. He said detectives have been drafted to comb the hide outs of the men of the underworld and expressed hope that the long arm of the law would soon catch up with them.
