New security arrangement foils bank robbery in Ogun

By DAUD OLATUNJI

ABEOKUTA – Men of Ogun State Police Command yesterday foiled an early morning robbery attempt  on Wema Bank along Idi-Iroko road in Ota, Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State  allegedly leaving many of the robbers injured.

The  robbers, according to the eye witnesses were  10 in number. They were said to have opened fire on the  policemen attached to the area, but later  fled after they were overpowered.

It would be recalled that, about three weeks ago, some hoodlums  broke into a  bank in Ifo, some 30 kilometres away from Ota early morning  and carted away large sums of money without any hindrance.

But, yesterday’s  robbery attack was averted,  as both  the  policemen attached to the area  and the robbers engaged each other  in a  fierce gun duel for about 20 minutes, before the robbers reportedly fled.

Confirming the incident, the  state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, disclosed that, the robbers  arrived the place as early as 4:28am and attempted to rob the bank before they were resisted by stern-looking policemen.

Muyiwa who spoke with Vanguard on phone on the incident revealed that the robbers were badly injured by  his men and had to flee the scene, leaving one of their operation vehicles behind.

He  later sent a statement, warning all medical practitioners  in the state to inform the police before treating anybody with gun wound.

According to him ”Ogun State police command wishes to alert the  general public that our men at Ota engaged some hoodlums who attempted robbing the Wema  bank in the early hours of today in fierce gun battle which forced the robbers to flee and abandoned their vehicle riddled with bullets and blood stain.”

Amosun tasks monarchs on Security
Meantime, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has urged royal fathers to cooperate with security agencies in order to combat the menace of armed robbery in the state.
The governor, who noted that meaningful development would be difficult without security, appealed to traditional rulers to give useful information that could unmask criminals in the state to security agents.

He spoke yesterday at the inauguration of the reconstituted State Council of Obas, where the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Aremu Gbadebo, took over the leadership of the council from the Akarigbo of Remoland, HRM Adeniyi Sonarowo.

Amosun said the activities of armed robbers across the state could not be ignored, as a result of which decisive steps had been taken to checkmate them.
