Ex-militants to stop agitation for amnesty
Headlines, Niger Delta Monday, January 2nd, 2012Some Niger Delta ex-militants have signed an undertaking to stop protests against their alleged exclusion from the amnesty programme.
Our correspondent learnt that the State Security Servcie ensured the ex-militants signed the undertaking on December 23 due to the security problems in the country.
The SSS was said to have viewed the protests as a threat to the public peace and compelled leaders of the ex-militant group under the aegis of Third Phase Amnesty to sign the undertaking.
The ex-creek warriors in the document, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent in Yenagoa, also agreed to desist from any act of criminality in pursuit of their demands.
The document was signed on behalf of the ex-militants by Lord Onipa and Tonye Bobo in the presence of the SSS representative, Leon Peters.
The ex-militants in the document entitled, ‘Letter of undertaking,’ also promised not to engage in any form of protest within and outside the state.
The ex-militants said, “We will not engage in any act of pipeline vandalism within and outside Bayelsa State. We will not engage in any form of roadblock in Bayelsa State or anywhere in Nigeria and we shall remain law-abiding citizens of Nigeria.”
Bobo, who confirmed the development, said they entered into the agreement to emphasise their commitment to sustaining peace in the region.
