Police recover 100 bombs in Kano

Barely three days after the Boko Haram sect unleashed mayhem in the
commercial city of Kano with serial bomb blasts and sporadic shootings
which left several people dead and several properties destroyed, the
Police on Monday said it has recovered more than 100 explosives
carefully ladened in ten cars in the city.

This is even as the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim
Idris gave the official death toll of last Friday attacks in Kano as 186,
comprising 150 civilians, 29 policemen, three officers of the State Security
Service, SSS, two immigration officers, one officer of the Nigerian
Customs Service and a journalist.

According to the commissioner, the explosives neatly concealed in
several vehicles and cans of over 300 Coca Cola sized cans, eight
powdered milk cans and eight 350 kilograms drums, were uncovered
followed intensified surveillance mounted by the police following the Friday
blasts.

“So far we have discovered cars and vans filled with explosives in the
northern city of Kano”, he said in a statement made available to newsmen.

The vehicles, he said, include a Honda CRV, Toyota Camry of different
models, Honda Brahma, a Volkswagen Golf, a Toyota Corolla and two
brand new Hilux pick ups.

He added that the vehicles were recovered from the Sheka Quarters,
NNPC Mega filling station, Hotoro, Tishama Goron Dutse, Miller Road and
Bompai.

It was however gathered that suspected members of the sect had on
sighting a stop-and-search road block mounted by the police in Bompai
area of the city abandoned the two Hilux pick-ups loaded with explosives
and fled.

Most of the recovered explosives were said to have littered the areas
mostly hit by the multiple blasts, an apparent indication that the sect
could not detonate all the devices earmarked for the attack before they
were repelled by the military.

Meanwhile Idris who gave a graphic detail of the Friday blasts, said the
perpetrators spoke in Hausa accent normally used in Northeast part of the
country as well as in neighbouring Chad Republic.

Meanwhile the ever-busy commercial city on Monday remained a ghost of
its old lifestyle as banks, offices and markets were yet to open for
business activities. The 24 hour curfew earlier imposed on the city has
been modified from 6pm to 6am daily.wp_posts
